Hi,
Welcome aboard...Don't worry about your age, on some evenings we've had an age range of 48 years!

Things on here have taken a wee bit of a bash due to the rubbish weather but anytime your planning on going skating post on here and sooner or later folks will join you.

Also keep an eye on here to see if anyone else is going out

Skatinbg with others is the best way to improve.

See you on the hill.

Cheers

Will.

Hey John - welcome ! Don't be concerned about the age thing , I've got 5 years on you !
Longboarding is a more relaxed pursuit compared to conventional skateboarding - enjoy the mako : :D

Were you out last night? There was a few of us in Kelvingrove last night, I was there just after 8.

As for stopping: you have a couple of options: footbraking or sliding. Its best to try to master them both...you'll not have the confidence to ride properly until you now you can stop...simple fact, but true (imagin driving a car with no brakes!)

Footbraking: there are a couple of ways
1. tip your back foot over the edge of the deck until your toe touches the ground and (very) gently apply some pressure so that you slow down...

2. Balance on you standing leg and lower your whole foot to the ground (some like to keep it touching the side of the board for stability) and again (very) gently apply pressure to the ground to slow you.

The other way to stop is to slide:

Watch this whole video:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=qcQpcvkylGs
its a better tutorial than i could give...this is the guy that invented sliding to stop.

You'll also need slide gloves: you could buy them from Lush, or you could make them:

And after all that if you get into sliding a bit more then heres a great resource for learning more:

See you in the park soon,

Cheers

Will.

hi all checked out you tube and even got a copy of art of going sideways.i know what sliding is now ,wow!i tried the footbraking thing but finding it kind of throws me off-balance very easily i take it this is only for slow riding then stopping.wouldnt want to put my foot down at speed reckon it would spit me off.but i know its also goin to be practice practice practice!!but hey having fun with it was at kgp again on tuesday.kinda practicing up the top where it is wide and ends at a gate do you know where i mean?nice surface there too.making sliding gloves at moment hope to skate at weekend,my partner in hossie having baby tommorow so not sure i,ll get there.hopefully at ,least one more session before i go off-shore on wed.im definately into it ive got the bug....

Brilliant...

I know exactly where your talking about: thats "the Glyde" because of the gentle gradient and the great surface you just glide over it.
If you go out of the that gate the first road that runs onto suchihall st. is called "the Bullet" it doesn't look too fast but as soon as you try it it's like the sledge run from "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation": its fast as fook...great for sliding!

Footbraking is for slowing down and stopping at any speed...but at speed I just slide to stop.

As for sliding thats what i'm really into at the moment so anytime you are going out stick a post on here and i'll join you.

As for the baby good luck with all that...i have a 16month old and i don't get out as much as i want to!

I'm definately up for some early skates...i usually manage to get out at about 7/7-30 at the weekend so it'd be good to have someone along.

Mako can slide no problem...as for the 78a's you can have a lot of fun sliding in the wet/damp just don't try to carve.

Give me a shout when ever you want a basic slide lesson.

Cheers

Will.
